recommendations - are good .......... MUST WEAR is wrong, what would happen if someone had the audacity not to wear white , would they not be allowed to exhibit?
I know I was picked up on wearing comfy boots that werent white a couple of years ago - oh!! the shame lol

I dont like the whites either, however when I have shown in theses classes I have obeyed the rules. I am not keen on the " follow the continental aspect" - I would hope we are showing the best of british sports horses - . But being honest the real reason I hate them is that I cant keep clean at the best of times, and whites are impossible for me. But rules is rules.

i think its more the fact that these classes are quite new to Scotland and folk just cant get used to not wearing tweed jackets, once everyone gets used to the idea then it will just be the norm - what i don't like is having to wear trainers though, i do think you should be able to wear sturdy footwear for safety - i use my dark boots as they provide a bit more toe protection & davie did the same he did to start with use his cricket shoes but after being trod on he put on his hiking boots too i do think it looks smart when watching these classes and everyone is dressed the same & it isnt expensive to get a pair of white trousers and a t-shirt it was much cheaper to kit Davie out for sport horse classes than it was for the hunter ones lol!

Re the rules, if its in any societys rules I read them and obey - if I want to change anything I get my backside into gear and try and get on the committee - maybe you should Tweeds and maybe your approach could help change this. as its obvious you loathe the whites. Believe me I have a forward thinking approach for an old bird!

I think there are enough dinasours on the ssh committee to sink a ship, one more (me) certainly wont help, plus I dont want our horses 'overstamped' on their papers(another silly rule, this should be optional). as for rules, sensible rules which help and promote a society to take it to the future and help it grow and thrive are great , but telling people what to wear as a must is a step too far.

I'm old and like to moan caz, plus its not for me to do something about it, its for ssh to give alternatives and listen to people or they will loose members and support hand over fist.

I've watched these classes a few times at RHS / Blair and have to say it doesn't look smart at all. You see all kinds of trousers, jumpers, t-shirts....even hoodys it almost looks sloppy Even if it was the white coats the Clydesdale handlers wear it would look a lot better. I also think the white is so unpractical, especially after they have been splashed through the mud a few times. I'm sure the continent don't have that problem I don't compete in these classes and probably never will, just an opinion from someone on the sideline

On big nose blow from the horse and you would look like a dalmatian dog!! Why not black - far more practical and clothing would be just as comfy for running etc. Would everyone want to wear luminous pink if that were in the rules - my that would be a sight to behold!! Again like JMK I don't compete in these classes so it's just my observations If folk aren't happy about it though - be proactive and vote for change. Or vote with your feet and don't do the classes

This doesn't affect me directly as I don't compete in these classes. But I agree that it doesn't look smart and tidy, in my opinion. Handlers often look grubby which is a shame but to be expected wearing white. Surely with regular wear whites will only clean up for so long I have a freind who has a lovely youngster who she would love to show but finds it un-practical to prepare two horses (of different types) and get changed from her usual smart attire in to whites and often back again. I expect many others are in the same boat and it really puts her off taking him out for these classes and she tends to put him into alternative youngstock classes where sadly he isn't such a good example of type. If there is so much dislike of the expected attire, why aren't societies taking notice of it, rather than the like it or lump it attitude - shooting themselves in the foot no doubt! I'm pretty sure the sports horse representative in the Cuddy at the RHS wasn't shown in whites, please correct me if I'm wrong.

Tweeds I really don't think that personal insults are appropriate at all. We do welcome constructive comments especially from our members and those who take part in our classes, clinics, shows etc. We are more than happy to discuss any suggestions and improvements and you are welcome to get in touch. My number is 07711 120130. At shows when competitors are doing more than one class people often wear tweed and other turnout etc and are not marked down for it. However when it is practical to do so, we wish our handlers to wear white. The whites are not incredibly practical (I'm a muck magnet too) but as Caz said they're much more comfortable than hunter get-up! We certainly ARE forward thinking and have made a good few changes this year with much more planned for next year.

plus I dont want our horses 'overstamped' on their papers(another silly rule, this should be optional). quote] And just to add that all our Mare and Youngstock competitions are equestrian and agricultural shows across the country are open to Non-SSH registered (including overstamped) horses. They are not however eligible for our Championships. As are our Loose Jumping competitions. And any clinic we put on. And our Foal and Youngstock Show. Obviously those being graded need to be SSHs.
