M's unshod at the moment but as & when he gets re-shod I don't want his feathers burning like happened this year.
How do people who have feathered ponies/horses that are hot shod stop them from getting singed?
I was wondering about turnout boots or similar but are they flexible enough?

We usually hose the legs down first and then if there is a lot of feather hanging over the hoof put an overreach boot on and leave it inside out if you know what I mean

I'm never organised enough to remember bandages. Rufus - I'm not sure my (or any) farrier would appreciate getting covered in vaseline - most of them are bad enough about a bit of mud. Vetrap - that costs money Pammy - does your farrier find it easy to work with the overreach boots on upside down? Keep the ideas coming otherwise I'm going to have to invent something & flog it to the feathered fraternity.

Hi V8 I think the first time we tried it years ago he found it fiddly but soon got the hang of it. Mind you he is a very good farrier and tries to oblige. I think he might draw the line at Vaseline as well I like the idea of a new invention as long as it's cheapish ;D

would a bit of tubigrip bandage work ? At least it would be reusable, and not expensive like the vetwrap, and wouldn't be bulky like boots.

Ah lochlands now that might just be the answer.
I wonder what size tubigrip a HiPo might need - can just see me going into the chemists & doing that man buying bra for beloved act ;D

kate I have used tubigrip size E, it was the one for knees though, used it over a dressing on a hock wound.

I'd change farrier! I've never had a problem with feather being singed off - my farrier knows he would be hung, drawn and quartered if that happened!

Hmm - farrier has already been changed but not for that reason.

Only thing that has come to mind is that I remember someone once saying they put their pony's feather in elastic bands to keep it out of the way - no idea if that works or not, I guess it depends on the length of the feather.

I just bandage rowan's legs. The farrier is very careful though so I dont usually have to bother. Its only if its the apprentice that I bandage.... :S

Have never even heard of that happening before!!!! Interesting..... Wouldn't have thought it should be a problem - I have always had natives with feathers and never experienced that............maybe your new farrier will be better !!! I think the tubi grip idea sounds best effective and reusable which a bonus!!! Good luck
