so it wasnt the bay? are we talking sports horses? or was I looking at a totally different horse? I remember the strong chestnut well grown yearling winner with what looked like a huge scar , I was told later it was there when she was born , it was kinda wierd and was in the shape of a butterfly so a sort of birthmark , great identification though, no - one could pinch her, I wonder how she was bred? shame there was no catalogue of breeding, perhaps next time eh? she is by Balou du Rouet out of an Odysseus mare. The scar is either a birthmark or was a kick whilst she was in the womb. Unfortunately it has grown with her as she's got older. It looks at though a saddle may cover it. Its so annoying - collects hair like mad under a rug!

As a spectator at this event I would just like to say the only worthy champion of the sporthorse classes was the 2yr old which was given the reserve.

Phew..have just trawled through all ten pages of this and I am exhausted...! ;D I didnt make the GS as was on holiday at the time. Hoping to get to the spring one with the young boy... Going back the the sports horse classes, I was recently judging at a show where SH classes were being held and the judge put several people and their horses out of the ring because they were incorrectly turned out. Apparently this is the norm for SSH classes? Anyway, have to agree, whites are awful...very unflattering and impossible to keep clean...

As the owner and breeder of the bay colt SSH supreme Champion I would like it known that he has not or ever has had a hernia, if Tweeds thinks she knows better than a vet who was pregnancy diagnosing the mare on the Friday before the show and checked the foal over as a routine check and did not find anything wrong with him; otherwise I suggest she keeps her slanderous remarks to herself. If she didn't like him - ok - thats her choice but to start a witch hunt against him I feel is out of order. If you (tweeds) insist on spreading these malicious, slanderous comments then we will have no hessitation in taking legal action.
On a more positive note as this is also my first year at showing I would like to congratulate the SSH for instigating this competition and anybody who has helped make it succesfull, In my opinion anybody who has the nerve to enter the show ring is a winner, any body can sit on the fence, not take part but give plent of criticism. As for my boy I was sooo pleased with him, he did me proud.

Well done with your boy, ;D looked stunning and if I'm not mistaken did he not do exceptionally well at his grading too.

well in my opinion no matter how cute the foal was, he had a hernia which is hereditory . The key word here is opinion, Tweeds was merely stating their opinion, luckily for the champion foal, the judges did not agree! ETA - Every time you put an animal in the ring for judging, you are inviting someone to give their opinion, where it is welcome or not! And the one thing I have learnt in all the years I've shown, their are plenty of ringside judges! And anyone who is has been to a show, probably has become one, I certainly have critisised from the side if the ring, but I'm probably more critical of my own animals, which I think is important

Wow have just trawled through the 10 pages too! Interesting debate, but some posts could have been a bit more tatcfully put perhaps?
All I can add is that from my moderate (but not extensive) experience of showing and spectating, in my humble opinion, there is no way that the Judge can see as much as someone from the ringside. The Judge usually watches one spot in the go-round and doesn't see what goes on when the horses are behind them. And in the individual show, they don't see what the rider's outside aids are doing either!!!!! but at least its the same for every competitor, but (obviously) some producers have better ringcraft than others.
I can't comment about in-hand or veteran classes, as don't have much valid experience in these classes.
overall though, my own opinionis that unaffiliated competitions in all disciplines tend to be more open to criticism as they often lack the rules and structure of the affiliated bodies
this has kept me up til ridiculous o'clock - thank goodness not working tomorrow lol

I am real sorry that my tact , isnt like it should be , indeed tact has never been my strong point, and as a judge I probably look through different eyes . I see just whats put before me, the colt in question to me was a pony, a very nice pony foal - hence not a horse. Then judging colts as youngsters, there are 3 important issues , teeth, toes and testicles, before you go any further ,then add type or breed , as these colts are tomorrows sires or top class geldings so I always am harsher on colts than fillies, but I notice the judging system has changed- there is no box for type or potential and I think it is most important that sports horse judges should judge these very varied animals put forward as 'potential for discipline' ,(overall impression) . I look forward to seeing your colt next year as a yearling, and all sports horse/pony competitors ,also any other 2010 foals out as yearlings. Its good to see whats going to come out the following year, thats showing, enjoy it, and take the knocks, you dont have to like them, but know what your doing must be right if you deserved so much criticism/debate, maybe it was the ssh letting you and others down. That was my view.
