well as you know solo been off for several months due to damaging both of his hind leg suspensary ligaments. vets didnt give me much hope basically he would never be able to do much more than hack so have been workin away not doin too much only started a few canters bout 2 3 weeks ago. So i thought in my wisdom a dressage test is basically what im doing at home but its only like 5 mins long. so decided lets take him to rc dressage do do prelims see what happens. Got there was a bit hyper but well behaved got on walked for bout 10-15 mins wi magnetic boots on did some trot and canter. went into first class he was a sod however no rearing, no bolting and even tho i was so nervous we made it to the end ;D. really was prob the worst test i have ever done but i was over the moon it was such a milestone we have got to. we got 56% but i wasnt expectin any more didnt deserve it but i was still so happy. Went into next prelim class much better behaved i just sat quietly im still scared if i take too much of a contact in case he will go up. but i felt so happy with what we had achieved after pretty much not been out for best part of 9 months. Waited to get results test sheets back and i almost fainted with shock, 1st place 70% from judy taylor could not stop smiling!!!! so gonna do one more comp end of september then nowt till next season starts. just wanted to share my happy day

How fabulous to be back out on him! I would just play it by ear, and maybe talk to your vet about whether he thinks he'll be ok moving up to Novice when the time comes. Maybe you wont be able to, but at least you've got your boy back sound

First of all congrats on an excellent result. My warmblood had his hind suspensories operated on about 3 years ago. He can now do halt/canters, flying changes and really use himself behind. It took about 18 months after the op for him to work properly again, the vet said3-6months recuperation (in light work) but it just wasn't long enough.

solo didnt have the op, vet said it prob wouldnt of made much difference so he was on box rest for3 months walkin in hand for 20 mins twice a day and then just takin it very slow. hopefully things will get better well done with your horse tho

TC - vet also said that its a warmblood thing damaging hind leg suspensary ligaments as they conformation not the best? I personally thought solo was quite well put together but his hind legs are quite straight which has led to both of his hind leg problems. Vet has said i just have to look out for the signs when/if things are going wrong, last time it was rearing, bolting evading contact unable to canter properly, medium trot went totally couldnt move properly, before it was amazing usually getting 7 or 8's vet also said he had secondary problems with his sacro illiac (sp) joint, as he wasnt moving properly he was puttin pressure on it. Vet said basically he will never be more than a hacking horse and he hates hacking At the beginning we thought he had kissing spine So to be able to compete in a prelim test is such a huge achievment ;D

Well done on your results and fingers crossed that everything works out in the long run. I would just take each day at a time and enjoy what you have - especially if you thought you weren't even going to get back competing.
Fab news!
