Diagnosteq (set up by the Equine Division of Liverpool University's Veterinary Faculty), helps identify which worms are affecting a horse at any particular time, allowing owners to worm with the most effective drug at the time the horse needs it most. This service is available to all vets and tests cost between £8 and £16. For details contact Diagnosteq on tel: 0151 794 6184. www.diagnosteq.com/

abbey are great and they get the results back pretty quick too and will also advise which wormer to use if you need to worm them - thankfully Fred has been clear (zero count) since i started using them that is well over a year now - the yonger ones have needed now and again to be wormed but not every time

Sounds like a good service and already you will be saving money on not worming them all.

will only worm the two of them, then you can get them rested to see if the wormer has done its job ( after a certain date, depending on the wormer). I will get the others tested again before worming them, no point doing them if they do not need it

If your horses are stabled nearly all the time they probably will be low at this time of year. Apparently you should worm them all in the autumn (or sometime during the winter) with moxidectin (Equest) as that treats encysted cystathomes (sp?) (the little ones!). These reactivate in the spring but are not active just now so they would come up as negative.
In the summer you should get them counted and only worm the ones that need it (>100 eggs per gram). If you are concerned that there may be any resistance to the wormer you are using you can have a follow up count done a couple of weeks later.
This is the advice from the horse worm expert at my work. Ours are currently the control group for a project that one of the students is doing on anthelmintic resistance in horse worms. They are getting counted every 2 weeks so it will be interesting to see how long it takes for eggs to start to appear again after worming.
