I'm thinking about my plans for breaking Wendy next year, and before it's done, I would quite like to get an adjustable saddle of some kind to use for initial breaking and riding away until such times as she has filled out so she can have a nice new saddle made. I wondered if anyone had any particular saddle suggestions for breaking youngsters

My friend got a bates leather saddle that has changeable gullet for her young Arab she is pleased with it and also feels secure in it, it was not cheap though.
The new thorogood saddles are surprisingly good, I hated the wintec ones but have ridden a few in the new thorowgood and they are good and adjustable and reasonable price if it only for short term.

I use a cheap wintec that's worth about £100 its been dropped and rolled on and is about 15 yrs old and is still going strong. it does tip me forward a bit but its not too bulky under the leg so I can grip on. and it has the sued knees too. I did have the girth straps replaced with leather ones thou

If a wintec will suit her shape they are often a good option. And there are some second hand bargains around. EBay has loads but even preloved has some decent priced ones.
Its also worth giving your local saddle fitter a call to see if they have anything that might fit, sometimes they have some cheaper ones to sell.

I did wonder about the wintec/thorowgood ones with the changeable gullets, I've never had one so don't know what they are like. Someone suggested a Shires one that's self adjusting but I can't remember the name of it and never seen one I guess that whoever does the actual breaking process with her will have their own saddles to use, however it would be nice to have something for when she is back home and I am riding her until she has stopped growing so much to warrant having a nice new saddle made for her. I do still have Silver's saddle too which I can't bear to part with and if it fits I can use it too, though would suspect it would be far too wide until Wendy starts to fill out a bit

I would definately recommend something with a changeable gullet, they're really easy to use and a god send for babies who seem to go up and down in width all the time! I broke Gus in an Ideal WH saddle which i just happened to have - it was Ammie's show saddle and it seemed to fit ok - but i really wish i'd had something fitted as it was way too narrow in the gullet for him. Having said that, he is a real special case when it comes to saddles!

I started Joker in a Wintec Wide - he has worn this since and he is rising 10! it is close contact, the adjustable gullets are a godsend and it is a perfect fit for him and me, I have done long distances in it as well - but it suits both our shapes - I would recommend one, Thorowgood do some great adjustables as well and neith Wintec or Tgood are expensive I have just treated myself to a KM new saddle for next year - its very comfortable and you can change the gullets so if you want a leather one a KM would be an option. Really exciting that its nearly time for Wendy to be started

I love my wow but they are heavy for a young one, hence why I got the albion for enya, but she is now in a wow again we did use it to start with as nothing else seemed to fit her and she managed fine with it just depends what fits and suits her and whoever backs her
