Can anyone give me an idiots guide for going on a pleasure ride, never done one and have a friend who has suggested we ought too do one next year. So what's the usual distance, what sort of speed and time, is it timed and do we set off in pairs or is it groups, do I need to read a map(lol). Sorry loads of questions just ought to get clued up if we are to do this.

I think most of thses things will depend on who is organising it.
I've done three, but they were mainly organised as fund raisers for vaulters going to WEG. First couple we hired hunters so just had to turn up and ride. Was very good fun, went round with people who knew the area. Third one we took Holly and Rog, who was an absolute handful as it was where he used to live.
There are bound to be loads over the Summer!

Pleasure Rides organised by SERC Scotland - each area has its own branch which organise and plan the rides. Pleasures are between 16K + 29K, some branches offer Taster Rides usually around 8k. Brilliant fun and you get to ride in some beautiful places. Its really easy to get started, all you need is your horse and tack, map reading is not essential - you get a map but its all marked for you and you get a talkround as well to keep you right plus markers are used on routes to help as well. I have managed to get lost on a few occasions purely due to much chatting and not enough paying attention! www.serctayside.com/ go to the "about endurance" page and all the info is there - anything that isnt clear just ask, there are several other peeps on here who do Endurance - some to a very high level and have extensive knowledge.
