My pony has a grey tail, apart from the bottom 8/10 inches, which is tan. This makes it look as if its been dipped in mud and left to dry. Have tried bleach, whiteners etc, all to no avail. Any suggestions folks?

I used to wash my grey horse's tail in hot water & hibiscrub - it would probably need done couple of times after the winter - but the results were sparkling white!

Is the hair actually not grey at the bottom? I know some greys do have a chestnut looking tail which whites out as they get older. I'd avoid bleach - not nice on hair! Have you tried the green Fairy Liquid?

Any suggestions folks? Sounds like you may have actually stripped the hair of its colour by using too many harsh products e.g bleach. No amount of scrubbing will take it out and unfortunately no whiteners will stick to it either. I'd just gradually trim it out.

Thanks guys, this is actually the first time I've used anything other than shampoo! Pony is only 3, so it's his foal tail colour that's growing out. Just thought there may be a few trade secrets I hadn't tried. X

Bedrockshetlands thanks I agree I'll just have to trim it out over however long it takes. I've not stripped out the colour, although if I had I wouldn't be posting on here lol xx

Splash's tail never looks sparkling white even when it is spotless as he has white, grey, silver & chesnuty strands through it - muchas annoying!
When it is filthy i do a prewash on the worst bitat the end with a stain removing soap bar, rinse it thoroughly and then wash with shampoo

Sounds like you might have to wait for it to grow out. My last horse had a white tail and after shampooing I used to use a couple of steradent tablets dissolved in warm water, leave the tail in it for as long as you can hold the bucket, 5 - 10mins, it worked pretty well.

I wash a couple of times with fairy then I make a solution with warm water and vanish and dip the tail in the bucket of solution and leave it for a while then rinse off, no more yellow tail

I also use a vanish type product! Just the cheaper one from the pound store. It does strip the hair of oil though so try to replace it or the hairs will hold colour longer next time!
