I am thinking of taking my boy along to the NPS spring show to do inhand hunter pony. Just wanted to check that this is definitley not show hunter ponies?
I have checked the rules, the definition of a hunter pony and even looked at the photos from the Blair finals last year!
I really don't want to take him to something where he will look ridiculous and be in the completely wrong class! He is a little chunky 14.2hh welsh d x hence why he would look completely out of place in a show hunter class

I don't do plaited ponies so I could be totally wrong, but I would imagine an inhand hunter pony class IS for those expected to do show hunter pony classes once under saddle.

I too would think that 'hunter pony' is the same as 'show hunter pony' - like a 'hunter' class is really a 'show hunter' class

Thanks guys. I did think it was too much of a coincidence to be different classes especially when I couldn't find photographs of these hunter ponies just show hunters. Thanks he would have stuck out like a sore thumb there!

Anything that states hunter pony without the words ofnM&M in it have to be palited- If you think your Welsh D can be plaited up then you can do it but they do expect palited and quarter markers in the ring

They are for ponies to make SHP but this is NPS description of a Hunter Pony if it helps with your decision (also, sometimes worth taking them just for getting them out and about. also you don't normally get many in these classes so good to support them if you can).
"The Hunter Pony should possess a good, honest head with a bold, intelligent eye, well set on head and neck from the shoulder, with a good prominent riding wither. It should have a flat, sloping shoulder with good length of rein, deep heart room and well sprung ribs. There should be sufficient depth through the loin with enough scope to carry a saddle. The quarters should have sufficient length with a well set on tail, with the hind leg correctly put on from the loin, giving a strong second thigh and a good strong, clean hock.
The limbs should have good bone with sufficient substance to carry a deep and compact body A hunter pony should have correct type with bone, substance and true action. The movement should be athletic with good engagement of the hind quarters but without the extravagance of the show pony."

i took my welsh d cross to ayr show hunter pony breeding last year and took champion. i wouldnt say he was show hunter pony. so its worth it to get them out. modified to say he was 4th in a large blair international hunter pony class in 2011.

See this is what I don't get lol, from that description I could take Stella, but I'd end up in a class with lots of little twiggy type ponies in bling BB's and feel like a right numpty ;D If its just for education then I'd take him Good Luck ;D

There is NO bling browbands in the show humter pony classes - plain browband and flat nosebands but as I have already said they should have substantial bone (NOT twiggy type ponies)but must be trimmed and palited

He will definitely be trimmed and plaited. Making plans to take him, enter on the day and make it an educational experience for him
