I was hoping to get my (rising 4) boy out on the showing circuit (local, and county level) and I was just wondering what type of classes I could enter him in. Both in-hand and ridden. I haven't done any showing before and don't even know where to begin with what classes to enter. Here is a photo of him to give you an idea of his type/build. He is a TB x Cleveland Bay x cob. i208.photobucket.com/albums/bb202/phoenix200416/Facebook/3%20Bilbo%203/bilbo_baggins.jpgAlso I would love an idea of what turnout would be required for us both! I do have a light green tweed jacket. I was told to steer clear of wearing a white shirt, but what colour should I wear and what would he need to wear for his turnout (tack, plaits...e.t.c.) All tips and advise greatly appreciated!

Sorry, I meant to say! He is currently standing about 15.2hh...although I would say he might grow a wee bit more yet and he still has some filling out to do.

A yellow shirt, red tie and beige jodhpurs would look lovely with a green tweed! A little gold tie pin would add the finishing touches to your top half and a lovely pair of long plain black riding boots to your bottom along with a navy riding hat with a flesh coloured strap. A pair of beige, brown or yellow gloves (Roeckl are my favourite brand)! I am not incredibly sharp on horse turnout but I'm sure he would be plaited. My mare is a showing cob so she has her feathers taken off and is hogged so never know what to do unless its a cob!
Best of luck to you both and he is lovely x

Thanks Becca for your response! I will get myself a yellow shirt and red tie, that would look nice! Just a plain red tie? Nothing patterned right?
Sounds very smart. Now its just the Bilbmeister I need to deck out for the show ring. Thankfully I don't think I will be hitting the circuit until next year! I am so unprepared! Well, I never expected to be showing this year to be honest, but I like to plan out what I am going to do with him in advance. So much we both need to learn about showing dress and etiquette! I would also need to learn how to do a ridden "show" when you have to walk, trot and canter on both reins for the judge. I am such a newbie to all this!

I am also a newbie bilbo, only been to one show myself! I have seen some nice red ties with yellow stars or pinspots on them and they are lovely! My tie is navy with white pin spots and it only cost around £6 from Robinsons - bargain! I'm sure you both will be fab when you get out and about. Looking back at the photo you posted of the "bilbmeister" I'm sure his feathers would need to be trimmed back too but as I said I'm not the sharpest on equine turnout haha!
Good luck and can't wait to hear some more from you!

Have you got a better picture, it's difficult to say from that angle? Whats his movement like? I'm inclined to say that with a bit more condition/muscle and top line, either a small riding horse or a Small Hunter? Both of which your height limit is 15.2hh Light Beige or Light Canary Jods/breeches, Navy hat, Cream shirt (have you an overcheck in your tweed? i'd tie your tie in with that, or go for something different from red like Orange, that would be nice with your horses colouring) hair in a bun, brown gloves Plait his mane and pull his tail. I'd try him in both classes and see which he slots into best. If small riding horse is the way to go, then you can get him a fancy browband but until you see which class is better for you, you'd be able to use a plain bridle

I would definately say a small hunter, he has loads of bone. He looks a nice type! He would need his tail 'banged' (cut) and pulled, and mane and forelock plaited. Feathers off and beard off, other than up its up to you how much trimming you do (i cannot stand people trimming tactile hair but lots do). For you, green tweed (or brown), no velvet collar, navy strapped hat and hairnet, brown gloves, cream shirt (useful tip - wash a cheapie Asda white shirt with yellow dusters!), neutral coloured tie - hunter turnout should be conservative. Cream/canary jods and leather boots. Brown tack, cavesson noseband, small or no numnah under saddle, brown leather girth If you are just doing a bit of showing for education rather than as his job, you can compromise on some of this! Look at lots of photos to get an idea, it does make a difference if you make a good impression on the judge as soon as you walk into the ring. Also, in most hunter showing classes, the judge will expect to ride rather than have you do a show, so be prepared and get him used to being ridden by different people Good luck
