I'm considering buying a Welsh D gelding who I would like to do a bit of all sorts with but also some ridden showing. From the photo's I've seen of Welsh D's the mane seems to have been pulled but remains as all Natives, unplaited.
What I'd like to know is why you would pull the mane but not plait it?! That seems completely un-necessary to me and I don't understand why this is done!!
Can anyone tell me what the correct turnout is for both a Ridden and In Hand Welsh D class?

I agree that the Welsh D would look silly with plaits, but I still don't get the point of shortening the mane when other natives are left natural and the longer the mane etc. the better!
Arabs are the same though...........some manes are left alone, whilst some others have a good 6 - 8" of bridle path taken out!!

To be honest, I think really long manes make a horse look like they are poor in front It can really shorten them, I even know some producers who will discretely pull a Highlands mane to show off it's front better Sect D's tend to be big fronted, so pulling the mane short, really shows it off to it's best, IMO ;D ETA- My comment about the plaits was meant tongue in cheek

Oh, just remembered! D's usually do have a plait! One behind the ear, to show they are clean through the throat. I tend not to do this due to the fact we take too many to shows and run out of time, so I add a bit more hair to the forelock to show this off

I've just pulled a Sect C's mane, so I took before and after pictures to let you see the difference. Before After I'm about to do his tail, so will take before and after pictures of them, as they are done differently than other natives too!! He's off to his first show under saddle tomorrow so wish him luck!!

That is really helpful Lav, thanks for that. There is no denying it looks so much neater! Good luck by the way!!
It's a very interesting subject the do's and don'ts for the showring! I'm really quite enthrualled by it all.
