What is the name again of the tool that you get for shedding/stripping coats? I am wanting to get one for doing Foxx's winter coat removal but for the life of me cannot think what they are called. We've spoken about them on here before

I think you mean a furminator? You can get them fairly cheaply from Amazon

I don't like the furminators or perhaps it's just that they don't like the thick coats of my Fells and Highlands, lol! I prefer these - www.totalhorsemanship.co.uk/smart-coats-coarse More expensive but much more effective IMO.....although I think I do have a furminator lurking somewhere if anyone wants to buy it ETA - although the description says it thins the coat, it only thins the long hairs so short summer coat is unaffected by it.

Yes that's the one! Furminator! I'll have a look at that link Kermie. Foxx has quite fine soft hair, but far too much of it! I can't cope with a full winter coat! I really wish i had clipped him! Think it's too late to clip now. Far far too used to Silver who has a summer coat all winter. The only hair she grows is in her lugs! LOL!
At least i know his pergolide is working wonders on him though!!

I am always a bit wary of some of these gadgets as although those that act to pull out already dead hair are fine, others actually cut the hair or break it off so gives the appearance of a shorter coat, but not actually removing it, so worry it might affect the coat coming through

although those that act to pull out already dead hair are fine That's what i'm wanting it for Puddledub. I used to have a thing like a cattle comb and it was excellent for taking out dead winter coat, but that was quite a few years ago now and it's sprouted legs. I've never seen another the same. I don't want to cut the hair to make it shorter and ruin his coat, may as well clip if i'm going to do that, but the amount of hair he is casting out is unreal!

I've been using it for a couple of years now and it's brilliant with hairies.....can't comment on how it would be on finer coats though.

I use one of those stripping knife things, I find it's the best thing for pulling out dead hair!! I had a huge pile tonight after grooming 4 ponies ;D Alternatively, I know someone who uses a blunt saw

I love the shedding blades. Cheap and effective! i took two buckets off the Dales colt and appaloosa filly yesterday... eek!
We got a cheaper version of the Furminator at the Highland for the dogs two years ago. My friend used it on her Shetland and couldn't get enough of it! can't for the life of me remember what the make is though and the people weren't there last year

I use a metal curry comb, its very good for removing coats. I also have one of those grooming stones which are pretty good as well
