I'm used to clipping the racehorses as and when needed pretty much from next week onwards until April so have never had to give much thought to summer coats coming through properly.
I plan on clipping out one of my Shetlands to ride over the winter. When would you start clipping a native and what would be the latest you would clip one for a decent summer coat?

Totty (shetland) will have his first neck/belly clip (like a mini trace clip) in the next few weeks and we'll continue to 'top it up' every few weeks, getting wider and higher as we go in to March/April (depending on the sort of winter we've had).
It doesn't affect his summer coat.
We do the same with Brie (section A).

Comet had his first clip just after Blair and will have his last one at Xmas time to avoid having clip lines in May

I normally give Max a full clip up till end of December. But last year i gave Jasmine a bib and belly clip at the end of Nov and she still had lines in April
