hey guys, just needing a little advice, This is my first year showing a Highland pony (Sheridan), who has a very long mane. Now I know they are supposed to be shown native (untrimmed ect) but I am wondering if I should pull his mane to just tidy it and make it more manageable. Googling Highland Pony Classes, most of them have 'shorter' manes, especially in the ridden classes.... Any other tips for turnout?

Im not sure what the official stance is (I would guess no trimming at all) but personally I like to see them with long flowing manes :-)
Good luck with him

The official stance woul be no trimming at all. Some Highlands have terrific manes. I feel that if they have too long and heavy a mane it (looks like it) drags the front end down. Also you cant see the shoulder at all on the offside, and thats the first side you see when judging a class. My stallions mane will grow down to his knees if allowed He lives out and its left flowing, not tied up at all. I do occesionaly take some off the bottom of it as it drives me mad!!!! And as Ive said above its difficult to see whats underneath it when showing them. The trick is to do it without it looking like youve trimmed it

Plastic curry comb will make it look tamed!

thanks guys, his mane is immense! does make riding interesting... he has got the biggest shoulder ive ever seen on a pony, so maybe its not a bad thing its hiding it!!! I might start combing it daily....

Brushing it regularly will soon shorten it and it will look natural rather than trimming it. The good thing about natives is that you can often neglect the mane in order to let it grow. The ones blessed with really long manes do IMO need a bit of taming or face the issue as described by knockandy above (which I totally agree with). I love a long mane, but you can get too long IMO.
