I am going to give Ted a little test I hope in June so long as I can get transport sorted and take him to a ridden class just to see how he does, he is still in very early stages in his career so I called ahead and asked if he got a bit worked up in canter etc (which he can do - not in a bad way at all just can cut up the school a bit at times and I do NOT want to get in the way of anyone) would it be okay to pull him out of canter which is perfectly acceptable she said and that I pull him to the inside and go back to a trot I hope though with a leader he will be more inclined to follow as he does that quite well So the tips needed are for my individual show he will not really be capable of doing anything too extravegent so would a walk round change rein, trot round change the rein then canter, back to trot change the rein and canter be acceptable? Its very simple I know but trying to keep stress minimal as I haven't shown in years under saddle and he has never done it before but they must all start somewhere? Also does anyone know if there is anywhere you can hire a tweed from? I will be getting one this year but it will be more Birthday/Christmas time (November/December) as I need some cash from parentals for that I currently have beige breeches, black long boots, corn short sleeve shirt, red tie, very understated pin, brown cane, and he is of course shown in brown tack. But I only have a black jacket which is my usual for dressage?! Any tips/help/advice is much appreciated? Thanks

Yes I would keep your show simple, better to have a short simple show that is good than do more and make a mess of it. Just think of the outing as a schooling outing to give him experiance. Sorry no idea where u can hire a tweed jacket sorry

I got my tweed from shires and it wasn't too expensive, I think it looks very smart! Individual show better kept simple and done well. As for the cantering I'm not sure if this would work but try and put loads of space between you and the horse in front so you have plenty space and the horses are not charging to keep up! Good luck

Hi, I am in the same position as you with my guy Monty. He is pretty immature and not really balanced in canter yet. We did our first show a couple of weeks back and entered the novice class. He did the canter go round with the other horses but due to space and his size I found it quite hard to keep him cantering without ending up very close to the horse in front (it was indoors) so just had to keep bringing him back to trot. I think judges will understand and let you do what you think is best. We didn't even attempt canter in the individual show but if you think your guy is ready for it then go for it and keep it simple. Like the others have said, just use it as a schooling session and do what feels right for you and your boy. As long as you have a good day out and go home with a happy horse there will be plenty more shows Good luck and hope you have a great day. Ebay would be a good place for a jacket or scot ads

Thanks for the replies Yes I will only canter if it feels "right" to do so, if he is a bit worked up I will keep it nice and calm for him and a pleasant experience as at this stage in life I feel more nervous at shows and such like. Awful nerves Think it might be a rescue remedy job for me, but he is a very good honest horse, out on a hack he canters like a dream so if I just keep it to a straight line then he will be fine but if I start going fleeing round corners we would do a wall of death round the arena and cut it up which does not leave a good impression. I was sure at most ridden clydesdale classes I have seen they didn't do an individual so I never had this planned haha!! Have spoken to mother dearest and she has agreed to a loan so I can get my dream tweed after all, hurrah!! Just need to see if the shop keeps them in stock now!!
