I am putting out early (very!) feelers for some riders for my shetlands next year. The idea being that they ride at the Highland Show. Said kids are also more than welcome to ride at other shows if we are going anyway.
I need a Lead Rein rider, min of 6years old (sorry, I don't do tiny tots!) a First Ridden rider and possibly an Open Ridden rider. This is for my big black mare, she is a full up 42in, built like the proverbial brick house, and has fantastic paces. As yet she has not been sat on but she will be shortly. Don't let this put you off as she will be perfectly well schooled and have been to shows before the Highland. As for an Open Ridden rider, age is immateral and as she is very broudly and deeply built she will be able to take up leg. I may also decide to keep the ride for the Open if I look ok on her which would then mean I would be keen to find a rider for my Dartmoor. But I shall see what the overall picture looks like with myself in the mare before going down that route.
Lead rein riders must be capable of walking and rising to the trot independently, not holding onto the saddle as there won't be anything to hold onto First Ridden riders must be capable of walk trot and a good, balanced canter, again, no holding on. So I would prefer a child near the top of the age range but is not too tall. Am I looking for gold dust here?!!?
I am half tempted to bring Flint back out for Veteran classes next year but anyone who has seen Flint will know he is more of an older kids ride. Being an ex-grand national pony he sure knows how to gallop! He is very well schooled but can take the mick a little and loves anticipating his gallop. He needs a quiet but confident rider to bring out the best in him. Flint probably won't do the Highland as at 20 (going in 5!) he has been there, seen it, done it, won it,got the tee shirt. If a suitable Lead Rein rider crops up then I may take him but I will not actively search for one for him.
If you have a suitable kid, or know of one that would love the chance of riding at the Highland, and other shows, then please pm me.
