my springer, fern, is now 11. shes had all the problems under the sun, but seeing as she was a working gun dog most of her life, shes doing pretty well. shes very arthritic, has addisons disease and cancer, and has just started to get cataracts and go a bit deaf!! but i have also noticed some other funny things, like staring into space (i thought it was cause she couldnt see properly), being a bit confused and has started anxiously pacing round in circles. shes completely out of her routine and today she barked (which she never does!) and almost gave herself a fright! ive done a bit of research and it sounds like she could be suffering from dementia. has anyone ever had a dog with this?

yip one of my russels has got doggie damentia she's 13 most of time she's ok but if anyone come's to visit she gets really upset, she runs round in circles and growels and barks its quiet distressing for me but over the last year she's started doin it when my oh talks to me the vet has recomended i get her p.t.s but when all is quiet in the house she's almost normal so im finding it very hard to make that decion she's healthy in every other way it's only her mind that goes but i must admit she is gettin worse she's started jumping up at me now

Yep, I had problems with a lab Sadly he deteriorated quite quickly and went from barking at chair legs to snapping at them until he eventually bit me. I was so worried he would go for the little dogs or a child that I had him put down!

Yes we have a 17yr old Jack Russell who has what I can only describe as "vacant" times when she just stands & stares. She also pees her bed,but on the positive side still loves her food & comes out to do the ponies most days.

We had a Cairn who we suspected suffered from it laterally. It got to the point where we couldn't handle him without a muzzle as he didn't like to be touched and picking him up was a complete no-no. It degraded to the point where he bit my dad who had to then have quite a few stitches. He was totally my dad's dog and it wasd very upsetting that it had got to that point. He was OK when everything was the same but got increasingly aggressive with visitors, even if they were people he knew.

My old german shepherd had dementia she lived to the good age of 15. I could see her lying peacefully then she would get up bark look around and then a glaze came over her - it was like she was trying to remember why she got up - it is very sad to watch. Eventually she lost the use of her back legs very suddenly and the vet was called. It is such a hard decision to make but only you know your dog. Good luck
