Poor Salsa Pup has been diagnosed with what appears to be tendonitis in her shoulder So she is on anti-inflamatorys (SP?) for two weeks and complete rest (yeah right!) shes already going mad! i have been doing a bit of research and apparantly doing some hot and cold treatment is quite good at aiding the healing process Instead of spending a fortune on expensive wraps could i do it the old fashioned way with a feezer block and a hot water bottle? and alternate them after 5 mins for say 20 mins? Also any other suggestions with regards to herbal remedies or experiances would be very much appreciated, as she is colins munroeing partner we are keen that she gets back to 100% soundness so she can continue to do the hills poor wee girl is in quite a bit of pain

Oh no, poor wee thing, how did she manage that? I don't know if its the same for dogs, but for horses the cold therapy(to reduce blood to area) is only really effective in the first ~48 hours while the initial inflammatory response is underway, then during the healing process over 4-6 weeks, you want to increase blood flow with heat/magnets. Ice/ hot water bottle is ideal, do you know anyone who would have magnetic wraps for the horses that could be used for your wee dog? I have magnetic boots, but don't think they'd be any use to you because the magnets are held in the lining of the boots and obviously wouldn't fit Salsa I wouldn't go spending a fortune on things either, time and rest will do the most important job, everything else is supplementery. Hope she learns to enjoy some lazy days of rest, must be hard though when she's such an active dog!

Thanks Westfields il try her with a hot water bottle over the next couple of days to see if that helps her a bit, she does a lot of hiking with my OH and will quite happily do 4 or 5 munroes in a day and after researching it a bit it appears that it is quite common in search and recue dogs, sledding dogs and greyhounds etc basically any dog that does a lot of excersise on a regular basis. Ive had to confine her to one room and she is only allowed out to go to the loo and then straight back in again and we have only been letting her out on her own to try and minimise the movement as best as possible. But shes already doing the wall of death round the room so its going to be a long two weeks at least! If it doesnt heal they are talking about getting her in for an op on her cartlidge Fingers crossed it wont come to that

Cortaflex do a version for dogs and i believe it is excellent ;D
Salsa is a staffie is that right? Forgive me if I am speaking out of turn here here, but I wouldn't be sure from their build with such powerfully muscled shoulders that they would be the most suitable breed conformationally for lengthy excercise like hill walking and Munroes as they are constructed more for power and short bursts of excercise and energy.
I realise she is your OH's companion on these trips, but just wondering about her suitability for doing quite such distances. Has your vet mentioned anything?
Hope she feels better soon - arnica might help in the short-term.

No shes not a staffie, she is much longer legged. She is meant to be a american bulldog cross but not so sure basically she is a mongrel. she was checked by the vet after i got her to see if her legs would cope and the only thing that he advised that she didnt do was mountain biking down big tracks (i mean us on the bike not her lol)

Being a staff cross boxer owner (similar to Salsa in that she is also a bull breed but longer legged) I'd agree that they are well equipped to do a lot of exercise, they have endless stamina - after all they were bred to fight bulls & i can't imagine you'd take one of those down in a hurry! They are also bred to be as tough as old boots! Mine's been bitten by a snake, jumped on by a horse, hit by a car (she just bounced right back up!!), is now 10y-o & will run about & play all day, unlike my lurcher who's energy is limited, he is definately a sprinter & in comparison he's a complete wuss!
Poor wee gal though! Frozen peas would probably be better than a freezer block Jen - you'll be able to shape it around her. And for the heat bit, what about one of those bean filled wrap things you heat up in the microwave?
On the boredom front - why not get her one of those Kong things that you put treats in & they have to shove around to get them out, or perhaps teach her some new non-energetic tricks to keep her mind busy. Or hide things under cushions, boxeds etc. A real marrow-bone would keep her busy for a while too.

yeah might try the frozen peas just in the process of boiling the kettle for the hot water bottle the now. OH is goingt o try and pop to the butchers in the morn to get her another bone, we get her one every other week to keep her amused in the house as even after a days walk she still bounces off the walls The thing with hiding things for her or giving her any kind of 'toy' she feels the need to run round the house with it in between chews. Whats seems to be working at the moment (although sounds cruel) is totally ignoring her shes hating it but at least shes lieing down sulking lol Il let you know how i get on with the hot water bottle Thanks for all your advice muchly appreciated ;D

Try giving her rescue remedy drops in her water, scullcap and valerian tablets also help keep them calm, I had to give Tara all those daily after all her surgery last year when she was attacked remember. Recently used the same on a very uptight scared and crazy bulldog foster and it worked wonders, she slept most of the day lol
Poor Salsa hope shes better soon :-(
Just had a thought what about a crate? Shes crate trained and will restrict her running around lol, then you can give her kongs/bones etc in the crate?

Did they give her metacam or anything for the pain? Or just anti-inflammatories?
