I have a 52 plate Shogun Sport Animal, I think it is a 2.8 I bought it last year for the sole purpose of towing the trailer and I have not been disappointed. Like you I had an X-Trail before and I found that towing with the Shogun you didnt even know you had anything on the back, it was amazing. I have had silly things go wrong with mine like tyres etc but I have also had the 4wheel drive lock on to (that was going to Highland SHow towing a caravan as we wre staying for the full show) I wouldnt swap it for anything now it is a great car and I use it for going to work everyday and I get about 2-3 weeks out of a tank of diesel.

The difference in size and petrol consumption rules out a LWB for me! I have to use it for day to day running. I wish they would do a middle size wheel base so it wasn't too big but had more boot space! ;D

We have a V reg 2.8 LWB Shogun. We bought it when it was just a year old. It is only ever used for towing, so has had a hard life It tows superbly. Usually 2 decks of sheep to the mart or 2 big Highland Ponies. Never managed to get it stuck yet! (although like everyone else we did get towed into Blair on the Friday this year ) I think its at 118k at the moment. Not sure when the new clutch system started to be fitted But its certainly put us off from buying another We did think to over come the clutch problem by buying an auto model. But the only ones we could find were in the high road tax bracket Apperently when the clutch goes in the newer design, you can replace it with the older stlye clutch Know of 3 Shoguns that have needed to have clutches fitted. We've gone for an Isuzu Rodeo pickup this time. Plenty of room for the kids etc. And a lockable canopy with masses of room for stuff at shows ;D And a super low road tax rate too

Yes Currie that's what puts me off the LWB - I tow anywhere between 2 and 10 times a month so I need something sturdy but I also need something good for nipping about day to day and think the LWB is too big for me.

have you had a look at the Kia sorento ? they are great for towing spacious & i think more economical for fuel . its a shame you are needing one now as we are going to be selling our 03 reg trooper soon ... its just had a new engine a few months ago fitted by IZUZU under warrenty and a new exhuast at the weekend

Thanks for everyones comments - it looks like in the next week or so I'll have a nice shogun to play with! Getting it for £4k which is a little more than I would have liked but comes with new tyres, battery, alternator, drive shaft, wheel bearings and other stuff I can't remember.
It's still cheaper than I've seen advertised elsewhere.

I have a V6 LWB Shogun and love it. Just before i bought it, the previous owner had converted it to LPG so it costs only half the price to run as if i run it on petrol. LPG is 47p a litre here . Very good for towing as well and a good family car for drives out. i need a 4x4 where i live because of very steep hills and being snowed in ,occassionally in the winter.

I love my shogun, it's a 3.2TDI SWB on a 54 plate - go for the Warrior spec if you can find one. Mine is currently valued at about £7k to give you an idea, I paid just over £9k for it 2 years ago. It's excellent at towing, and brilliant in the snow.
