One of my gang has suffered really badly over the last 2 days from cleg bites. His neck is up in huge swollen lumps and they are so itchy. I have put a flyrugo n him, but it is pretty useless against clegs as they still bite him through it What I wondered was if it was possible to give human antihistamines to horses to help reduce the swelling and itching and if so how many would I give a 15.2hh arab?! He weights approx 480kg.

i had to resort to piriton for fred too, vet told me 14 twice a day for 5 days but we decided he may react to them so gave him 7 twice a day and it did the trick - check with your vet first though, i got the tablets from the vet they gave me 140 so still got plenty left as i didnt need to feed them for 5 days after day 2 they had stopped being angry looking

I have also used Piritin tablets under vet supervision for Silver. I had to give her 8 in the morning and 8 at night for 7 days. She's roughly about 430kg. My vet actually told me to get them from my local chemist or Tesco as it was cheaper than the vets doing them on prescription. My local chemist wouldn't sell them to us the last time as when they questioned Stuart if they were for him, Stuart said they were for the horse and they wouldnt sell them saying they weren't licensed selling them for animal use. He said, oh no, they're for my girlfriend for which they would only sell him if i accompanied him so we got in Tesco's. So don't tell anyone your using them on a horse if you don't get them on precription from the vet. I've been using global herbs Fly Free on the horses recently with which i have had great results. Silver is absolutely driven demented with flies. The horses smell a bit unplesant on the fly free but at least they are less appealing to the biting beasties and when the horrid beasties are past, the horses can go back to smelling more normal for the winter! LOL!

Ditto Piriton! And my new cure - and i do mean cure! - for flys (well, midges, they are the only ones that bother Gus but do bother him to the point he got cellulitis) is neem oil. Its a fabulous insecticide and also is anti microbial and anti fungicidal - smelss horrid though the horses love it, but works 100%, the only thing i've found that does

do you mix the neem oil with something kath or just wipe it on neat where do you get it from I get the Pro Equine stuff, and just put it on neat. The horses adore it, try to lick it off your hands..!

I'm a distributor for Pioneer Products Boo, and we sell pure Neem oil too... you can also make a spray by mixing it & an emulsifier with water - in very cold weather it may solidify a little when mixed to a spray, but that's easily resolved by placing the bottle in a warm place for a while (such as dunk it in hot water).

Thanks for all the advise guys. Kath you are right, Neem Oil is the business as a fly deterant. Don't know why I didn't remember that one myself! I'll get some for poor khaz and cover him in it.

Might have to try and get some need oil to try on Silver. With it being an Oil, if your putting it on neat, will it not burn on a hot day? Is that the most ridiculous question or what! Ha ha!

Not a ridiculous question at all!
Personally I don't use oils neat.. I mix a small amount (10ml) with emulsifier in a spray bottle, and top up with water and shake... makes a cost efficient spray, and the oil is diluted enough so that I don't need to worry about burning. There's other oils that are equally good btw - tea tree, lavender, citronella all have insect repellent qualities...
