I've also used IV Horses MFP oil in the past with good results, but I'm with Rosie!! Keratex Mud Shield Powder is fab. It seems to give a waterproof coating to the skin and prevents any further scabs developing. When I bought my gelding 2 years ago, he'd just come from Kent and hadn't experienced the good old Scottish Winter! Needless to say he took mud fever really badly and nothing I tried seemed to work, including IV Horses MFP! In the end out of sheer desperation I covered him completely in vaseline (to get the scabs off, as he wouldn't let me wash them off!) and covered that in cling film, adding thick travel boots over the top and left it overnight. In the morning the heat from his legs with the cling film had sofened off all the scabs, which came off easily. I plastered him in Keratex Mud Shield Powder daily and within 3 days the infection had gone and he was sound again. It took about 2 months for the hair to grow back in properly, but he has never had a problem with it again since. Just to be sure though I put a coating of the powder on him at the start of each Autumn!

we use a very cheap and simple solution....pig oil...! you can buy it by the bucket load from any farm supplies shop and it works wonders on both our clydesdales and light horses. the oil stays on the legs for days at a time and repels any mud from sticking to their legs and skin and it also conditions feathers and protects hair
a friend of mine uses udder cream too!
