People, heard a bit of chat lately about changes to the turnout of show horses/ponies. One of them was that as of 2014 you cannot trim or clip any hair off a 3 yr old or under for showing, the other was that you would no longer be allowed to trim whiskers off your horses chin or muzzle....has anyone else heard anything?! Or is this old news for the Showing World?! Did try to find information on the tinterweb but couldn't find anything there to substantiate any of the rumours!!

there is always controversy over the clipping of foals but not heard if banning of clipping and trimming of youngstock. thats not to say its not true though. i would have thought a lot of people would have got them used to the clippers when they are young. cant understand why they wouldnt be allowed to be trimmed.
i dont know how they would know if an animal had been trimmed or not, some are naturally less hairy than others. people that clip foals just say they are not clipped and how could anyone prove other differently.
is the trimming of whiskers ban supposed to be for older ones too? would be odd a hack with all its whiskers. and show cobs would be a bonnie site! lol
m&ms used to not supposed to be clipped which is ridiculous for an animal in work. they are pretty much all clipped now.

Is this something to do with the welshies? I thought I read something on facebook but could be totally wrong.

They have enforced the rule about clipping Welsh Foals and Youngstock, you can no longer clip up the front of the gullet and take the hair of the head of a Welsh pony for showing purposes, discreet trimming of the jawline is allowed, doesn't say anything about taking off the whiskers, I tend to tidy them up with the young Welshies though, as not all judges like to see them off Personally, I don't have a problem with clipping foals, I have clipped foals in the past, due to the fact they've been sweating in the stables!! Infact, one of my ownbred foals, now three has been clipped for the first time, since he was a foal and he stood like a lamb, so it's also educational (he strongly objected as a foal, lol!)

I can't see the point of clipping foals - i understand it for reasons that Lav has given (though i would leave it to sweat ) but Arab people do an old half head clip just for vanity's sake and its horrible And why you would clip a horses whiskers is beyond me!

I know a few non-showing folk that clip their foals so they are used to it, I never really gave it much thought before but I dont see the harm in it.

Im with Kath on this one - I particularly dislike the odd clip they do to arabs, why ruin such a beautiful animal with an awful clip. I know someone who breeds Bs - they get clipped out and rugged over the winter, they dont get shown during this time - pointless especially the youngstock.

I think it depends on the societies and their rules. I haven't trimmed Wendy's whiskers as she is only 3 and we did one show (she is turned out to type as a hack) however, she will be fully trimmed up as a 4 year old. My mare Silver was always trimmed and preened to within an inch.
I don't necessarily disagree with clipping out foals, I think it's more traumatic for the foals that require plaiting to be plaited for the first time than clipping for the first time, however I don't understand some of the clips that are done to show off the jaw and neckline, you may as well take the whole lot off. It's very controversial in the arab scene, but there is no rule by the AHS against it
