Hello, I have a really bad habit of tipping forward when I'm riding my cobby (as demonstrated below hopefully) just wondering if anyone has any good tips for staying straighter and back more? Attachments:

Just keep telling yourself to lean back, I have the same problem, but when I actually think I'm at the point of leaning back, then I'm sitting up straight

lots of people have that problem. i agree with lavendar, now that you are aware you are doing it just remember and tell yourself all the time to sit back until it becomes second nature. either that or get a pony like i used to have that kicked her heels up all the time and if you didnt sit back you were off lol

As Lavender says, but also try and raise your hands a bit.
When you have been used to riding in any particular position any change always seems extreme.
I used to be like that when I hunted a lot .... the season came to an end and I had to drop my stirrups and sit up!! It felt alien! :/

Thank you I just feel he's pulling me forward all the time we have issues with brakes too and I think it's all to do with my balance I went for a lesson a few weeks ago and did quite a lot of no stirrup work and did quite well but I've only got a field to work in and don't really trust him yet to do that xxx

I am the worlds worst for tipping but often it is due to back ache, after I have been to the chiro I can sit straight again - I blame pushing barrows of muck all day long :)that and lack of confidence it helps if there is someone that can shout at you every so often to sit up I think I am sitting up but then i get yelled at to sit up

Think we are all guilty of it especially when working on our own. Echo everyone else also think chest out, ribcage up and tummy forward, eyes up and look ahead rather than down the shoulder, I normally find I get better when doing sitting trot and if you have some where safe to work put you inside arm up your back and reach your arm up with the back of your hand against your back.

Think of a modelling pose.....
Lift your rib cage, think of sucking in your tummy (not saying you have one just use the image!) and stick your chest out. Once you have done that think of lifting your hands a little too and this will make it easier to sit straighter.
As others have said it can pretty much feel like you are leaning back until you become accustomed to it.

The one thing that really helps me is rolling my shoulders back - that, and think of engaging your stomach muscles aka pilates. Its hard to being with but it will begin to become habit
