my biggest prob is when i create all the energy get him nice and round go onto the diagonal he does huge big trot and for some strange reason i let him have his head??? Why i do this i have no idea lol i think to start when i was just gettin to figure out how to ask for medium i was gratefull for what i could get and let him have his head to keep the balance. so now he has this big stonking medium and at times extented which is very difficult to sit to but i just cant seem to keep him truly on the bit. Yes he lowers his head and really uses his back but i just cant seem to keep the roundness. I think a lot is to do with my new saddle which is now for sale Hey ho still gives me something to work towards at least he is going forward in balance whithout breaking into canter, hopefully once i can sell this saddle and buy a new one things might get easier

A dressage judge also once told me that she would mark higher for someone who collected their horse up in the corner before turning across the diagonal and asking for medium and then rebalancing again at the end of the diagonal. She said she likes to at least 'see' that the rider understands how to prepare for it etc even though perhaps not really giving much medium etc.
I thought that was good - of course not all judges would feel the same and some really want to see medium - but I do think at least if you show you are preparing for it etc as there should be a clear transistion between working and medium etc and a lot of riders tend to just try and push for the medium without actually thinking about the upward and downward transistion.

OM Katie keeps saying you MUST show a difference so I can understand this judge totally. Not too sure what level everyone is at but remember for novice you show some med ie 3/4 line to 3/4 line whereas elem is from marker to marker

If i dont collect i dont get medium It took me long time to figure this out lol I used to go fleeing round the corner and kick on and this is when he would loose his balance or break into canter. Its funny though a lot of people try to tech a horse medium on a 20m circle i just can do medium on a circle lol Im just happy he can show a good meduim and we can now get it almost from marker to marker ;D

Another wee thought!! Keep the medium through the corners or the little smart a**es start to put the brakes on on the 3/4 line!! Never though Kenco would anticipate slowing down but he get a nudge at X just to remind him to keep going to the letter

Woo hoo - had a lesson yesterday and we got it! Just need to keep practising now Dom knew he was being asked to do more and was coming through from behind (he tracks up very well due to his build) but not getting his front feet out of the way hence he was over reaching. So Katie and I worked on really really getting him round and then gradually increasing the ask and build him up to it and hey ho it clicked! He really does try hard to please, he's a dude ;D So, as suspected, it was to do with how I was riding him as opposed to what he could give me. Now there's a surprise eh ! So away to practise, practise, practise... And by the way, courtesy of Meerkat, I am now the proud owner of an isabell werth dressage saddle which I am very impressed with. So comfy and helping my position no end!

Woo hoo great news Summer - it's lovely when you finally click and at least you have now felt it so will now when you are on your own whether you have it or not Great regarding the saddle as well - to be honest the right saddle makes all the difference ( I should now that lol !) I've got Stirlingshire up tomorrow to hopefully make some tweaks to my one and then we can get going again ETA I wish I could get lessons with this Katie

OM - as penllys says, you should think ahead and try and book a lesson with Katie next time you are down our way. You could try and arrange a lesson if you are down here competing. Either myself or penllys I'm sure could help out with use of arenas Glad your saddle situation is finally resolved - you'll be pleased to be able to get on with your riding now

Katie is pretty busy with her teaching OM so you'd really need to give her a phone and see what she could fit in and when. Although Penllys might be able to make a discreet enquiry In terms of livery yards near her, again Penllys would be best to advise as she knows that area better. Katie has her own place but I don't think she does any teaching etc at home. My yard is prob about half an hour away from Katie and if any help I think my yard owner wouldn't have a problem with "holiday" livery as we have an isolation block with large airy stables that could be used for a temporary stay. Penllys can probably be a bit more help on this one I think OM
