hmm, maybe i should see if belle will stay on all four feet first ;D i like the idea of suede but i think once it gets worn the sadlle starts to look pretty tatty. due to hip complications, i always rode bareback so the slimmer the saddle (and horse!) the better!! ;D

Well the cobs vary so much in height, width etc is hard to say what would suit, native pony saddle company offer a good range and make to your own template. Might be worth paying the call out fee for your local saddler and trying to find the ideal saddle - and then going off and searching for it cheaper elsewhere

Iv just had native pony saddle company out to do a fitting. They are making one to template said it would take 3 weeks to make so Im waiting patiently, but so far the service has been excellent, I spoke to them at the RHS and they were with me the following Wed armed with a good range of saddles to try and see which style fitted, looked and rode the best for my horse.

You may find the Ideal WH too wide in the twist if you've got hip problems but they do a new saddle now designed to create a narrower twist on a wide, cob type tree & panel - look at their webiste & you'll see it - not the H&C, the new one is a straighter cut & they'll make it into whatever flap, extra girthing etc options you want, even velcro on knee rolls etc.

our suede is now 6 years old and still looks good, def a good idea for staying in the plate
Ebay have suede sandringham saddles, new for not a big amount, I use these on the bigger ones, Solo has a Sandringham GP med fit when I broke him in, he was fine in it till he bulked out, maybe wide fit in these saddles a good idea
If it helps I can come down with 3 poss 4 diff types to try on her to give you an idea

Most Arabs are wide - the Native Pony Saddle company actually has a sister company - the Arabian Saddle company & the saddles are very similar in styles & widths. Quarter horses also tend to be very wide.

Eskvalley - do you deal in saddles? My daughter is looking for a saddle for her youngster and having a devil of a time getting a saddle fitter to come out - they all seem to be off work for some reason! I think ideally she wants a vsd, not as forward cut as a gp but not too straight cut either. The problem is her 4 year old is wide at the withers but needs narrower panels as not so wide across the back, that's why we don't want to buy off the peg - any ideas that are not too expensive???

scottyhorse, no don't deal in saddles, I just have so many as I have a fair number of different shaped and sized ponies and a few horses in the past too!
you can always take your youngster to Central Saddlery if they can't come out and get a saddle fitting done there, I know that they do both new and secondhand
I'd def get it professionally fitted, esp if not an easy shape to fit a saddle onto

Fylde ray if your cob is pretty wide bluebell, otherwise fylde marjorie / ideal ramsay. I havent got a native pony saddle but IMO the ones I've seen fitted on to friends ponies arent as good.
