Especially yearlings, how short should they be? I'd rather not pull it, but tis very very long and thick and makes his neck look really narrow. I don't want it to look too unnatural either I really ought to rug him up for next year

Pulling does give the best finish. If you really dont want to pull use a supreme rake or similar to take some of the bulk out if its unruly and razor the ends. Can take a wee bit experimenting to get the right length but sect As manes shouldnt be too short. Always find it good to look at professional pics of say the Royal welsh in the case of Welshes to see whats expected by way of turnout etc

Well ,its not too bad i'll need to send a photo tomorrow to someone first to give me their honest opinion before putting it for all to see haha. It doesnt look too bad just a bit thick, needs thinning i think.

Its really your preference. The breed standard says they should be natural. I have only ever seen one welsh which was a D in the showring with a long mane. Personally I thought it looked terrible but thats my opinion. My C and Ds manes are usually a bit on the short side as thats how I like them and only one judge has ever mentioned that she wanted to see Ricardo with a flowing mane! Not whens hes owned by me she wont. Again, if you like your ponies mane as it is, keep it that way.

I love long flowing manes and tails My foals are still growing but for Newforrest's they can be pulled to suit the horse but not too short, tails trimmed too Every breed is different i thought natural was best being Natives but their rules for everything now a days
